Case Study #104

Product: Eaton Powerware 9330-20kVA

Application: Banking facility data center

Synopsis: Customer stating that UPS is going in and out of alarm intermittently

Resolution: Nationwide Power Engineer onsite to trouble shoot the UPS for intermittent alarms. No internal issues wrong with the UPS. All batteries passed Midtronics test and were within manufacturers parameters. Alarm log indicated no problems, with last logged entry almost 3 weeks prior. After additional trouble shooting, problem first appeared around the time a new HP server was installed. Nationwide Power Engineer tested input and output of server and pinpointed problem down to a faulty single phase power supply internal to the recently purchased HP Proliant server.

Root Cause: Older and faulty used power supply used in a recently purchased server.

Case Study #103

Product: APC Symmetra PX 80kVA

Application: Medical facility data center

Synopsis: Customer received a bad battery module notification. A replacement module was ordered over the internet and installed. Battery alarm did not clear with the replacement module.

Resolution: Nationwide Power Engineer found that the replacement battery module that was ordered contained a different brand of battery than the other battery modules in the UPS. As a result of the different electrical characteristics of the replacement module, the firmware concluded that the module was bad and in need of replacement. After replacing all four battery modules in that row with identical batteries, the firmware accepted them as good, resulting in savings for the client in form of not having to replace perfectly functional modules.

Root Cause: Dissimilar batteries/modules within the same row.
